After years of saving, scheming and planning, today is the day. I’m finally on my way south!
I left the DC area under cloudy skies and quickly got out of the congestion and on to the back roads. The Potomac was running high from all the rains we had the previous few days but the ferry was running anyway. Good thing too, because it would have meant a 40 mile detour otherwise.
I meandered my way across Northern Virginia countryside through small yuppified towns and farming communities. A few strong wind gusts pushed the bike now and then but otherwise it was an uneventful & scenic ride.
At this early stage in the trip I’m more interested in getting to my destination for the day rather than stopping for roadside attractions (not that there are many around here), so not much to report on day 1.
I called it a day in Front Royal and checked in to a cheap hotel. I’ve brought camping gear along with me but the low nighttime temperatures mean I cant camp comfortably yet. hopefully as I get further south I’ll be able to camp and stretch my budget out a bit.
